Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Portrait Photography

Clear, reasonable expectations clarify what to expect so that we have a better understanding about the outcome.

How does a portrait shoot work?

Here's how it works in a 4 stop process:

  1. You book a session by paying an advance

  2.  I arrive at the shoot location at the appointed hour. A typical shoot needing 3 to 5 photos take around 1 to 1.5 hours (including the time to setup). If you need more photos, it might take longer. I keep showing you the photos as I shoot and making changes in lighting and posing as necessary

  3. At the end of the shoot, I show you all the photos on my laptop and help you pick and choose the photos you like. Based on the number of photos you choose, you pay the balance amount (total payable - advance = the balance).

  4. I edit and send you the photos you selected photos (and delete the rest), you seek any changes if necessary and give feedback of my work

What is the basis for your charges?

Time and effort it takes for the shoot and re-touch (which is 3 times the time and effort it takes to shoot), a small portion of the cost of expensive camera, lens, strobes and other equipment, cost of hardware and software, charges of my assistant, cost of commute and most important a small remuneration for years of experience and skill in shooting portraits. (As I am writing this, there's this strange feeling behind the back of head, "...am I charging enough to cover all these costs?" Haha...)

How many photos do you take in a session?

I usually shoot multiple headshots and portraits for each person in a single session so that you can select the headshot or portrait that you like, so that you have a choice.

Do I have to pay for all the photos you take in a session?

No! you only pay for the photos you select. I will show you all the photos, you can select what you like and pay for them. I will edit the photos you selected and give them to you.

I need photos to be of the size and resolution recommended by LinkedIn and Facebook. Can you do it?

Yes, of course! I won't charge you for that. I will give you each photo in LinkedIn and Facebook recommended size and resolution so that you can just upload them to your profile without having to crop or resize.

I need backdrop to be in a specific solid color. Can you do that?

Yes, let me know the specific shade backdrop you want and I will give you the photos with that specific color backdrop.

Can you change the backdrop as per my requirement?

Yes, I can. However, if you want the same photo with different backdrop colors in addition to the original, you pay for those photos.

Eg. 1 the original photo was taken with white backdrop, you need the same photo in white as well as gray or any other color - for which you pay.

Eg. 2 the original photo was taken with gray backdrop, but you need it only in some other shade not the original - you don't pay extra

What do you do with the photos I don't select/choose to buy?

I delete those photos anytime after 2 weeks depending on available storage.

Can you give away the photos I didn't select for free? (you are anyway going to delete them)

I delete them BECAUSE you are not buying them meaning that you don't need them. If you want them you are welcome to buy all of them. You pay for the photos you take. I too need to pay for expensive equipment, continual upgrades of computer hardware, storage, monthly software subscriptions, commute to your office/home, my assistant and a host of other bills so I can't give away photos for free. Thank you for your understanding.

I am camera shy. Will you help me in posing?

Yes, of course! I will guide you in bringing out your best for a headshot or a portrait. None of my customers are models - please check this gallery - all these are people just like you.

I don't know what to wear for the shoot. Can you help me with that?

Yes, I will work with you to make the shoot a successful one. I put together a detailed guide to grooming for both men and women - click here to see that. If you still have any questions you can always get in touch with me.

What are business headshot/portraits?

These are headshot/portraits shot outdoors with ambient backdrop. It could be your office, outdoors or just about any location you prefer to be your background. Check this gallery - a picture is worth a thousand words, right?

My office (or home) is very small. Can we still do the photo shoot?

Yes, once I am at your office or home, based on space available and lighting, we can select the best location therein. If it is not deemed suitable, we can head outdoors for the shoot. All the photos in this gallery were shot in tight spaces, small offices, conference rooms or small apartments.

What are headshots?

Headshots are portraits shot at  shoulder length  - just below the shoulders.

How are headshots useful?

Headshots are preferred style of photos used for formal profile pictures as they highlight the person's face which is quite fit for the purpose. Check out this short and relevant blog post (just 1 minute read).

How do I know to choose between headshots and portraits?

You can go for one or two headshots and portraits each which you can use for different purposes. I recommend getting both done. Here's the gallery with a mix of headshots and portraits - browse through!
